A model text, written by a teacher as part of the planning process for a specific topic to be taught, encapsulates and summarises the intended learning, including content and language, as well as guiding the scope and sequence of the topic.
A model is an example of the target language a teacher shows learners to help them notice language patterns, or to encourage them to imitate. This could be a sentence, a model of an intonation pattern, or an entire text, such as an example of a writing genre.
By the end of the article, the reader will understand what makes a model text appropriate for students, the features of writing that can be analyzed in a model text, when to introduce models in the writing process, and different ways to use models.
