Además de por esta hazaña alpinística, el austriaco alcanzó la fama por su amistad con el Dalai Lama y la filmación en 1997 de su libro autobiográfico Siete años en el Tíbe t, película protagonizada por Brad Pitt y dirigida por Jean-Jeaques Anaud. Harrer nació en Austria en 1912, en los Alpes de Carintia.
