There are four main types of tides: diurnal, semidiurnal, mixed, and macro. Diurnal tides occur once a day, while semidiurnal tides occur twice a day. Mixed tides are a combination of both diurnal and semidiurnal tides, and macro tides are exceptionally high tides that occur due to specific geographical features.
These bulges are Earth’s high tides. Most shorelines experience two high and low tides per day. One high tide to high tide cycle (or low tide to low tide cycle) takes a little over 12 hours.
In general, most areas have two high tides and two low tides each day. When the two highs and the two lows are about the same height, the pattern is called a semi-daily or semidiurnal tide. If the high and low tides differ in height, the pattern is called a mixed semidiurnal tide.
