4 de dic. de 2020 · The Amazon is undoubtedly the world’s largest single rainforest covering 6.7 million kilometres at present, hosting up to 10% of the world’s biodiversity in one single forest. Others include the Congo rainforest in Central Africa, the second largest rainforest, as well as Southeast Asian Rainforests covering Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia.

31 de mar. de 2022 · The Amazon Rainforest is resilient: the largest rainforest on the planet has been around for at least 55 million years, surviving repeated ice ages and warming. But human impacts, combined with climate change, are decreasing that resiliency, causing the forest to lose its ability to bounce back from repeated disturbances, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change .
A healthy forest ecosystem sucks in CO2 and keeps other climate-forcing factors in relative balance. But in the Amazon, where forests have faced increased logging, mining, dam construction, and clearing for agricultural (typically using fire), the system is drying and degrading.

Amazonía Emprende, a forest school, is helping to combat this by teaching local communities to develop sustainable businesses using nature-based solutions.
10 de nov. de 2022 · Most of the region’s remaining rainforest is on the island of Borneo, which includes parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Although deforestation has been slowing, the region lost the world’s largest share of primary forest cover between 2002 and 2019. Borneo lost 15% and the island of Sumatra 25%.

You can wander in it for years, without ever seeing its edge (as some discoverers sadly found out). But in the last few decades, the rainforest shrank by about 20% due to deforestation.
