Like 59. Woodcut (aka Xylography, gr. ξύλον — tree, γρᾰ́φω — write) is the oldest type of engraving, a printing technique, in which artists carve their drawing on a wooden board. The wood density and structure, the fiber resistance during cutting determine the line thickness and smoothness.
The design of a woodcut is produced by elimination, cutting away everything except the lines or shapes to be printed. Some idea of the technique involved can be gained by looking at the woodblock ( 19.73.255 ) that was used to print Albrecht Durer’s Samson Rending the Lion ( 24.63.111 ).
