Plot synopsis. In the original version of the tale, Todd is a barber who kills his victims by pulling a lever as they sit in his barber chair. His victims fall backward through a revolving trap door into the basement of his shop, generally causing them to break their necks or skulls.
Fifteen years later, Barker, who has rechristened himself Sweeney Todd, returns to London to seek revenge by killing Turpin and his accomplice Beadle Bamford, using the instruments of his trade to slit their throats.

Judge Turpin expresses a desire to marry Johanna but is disappointed in her refusal. Bamford encourages Turpin to visit Mr. Todd for a shave that would improve his appearance.
