All three of the segments in Trilogy of Terror are based on individual stories by horror writer Richard Matheson. "Amelia" was based on the short story "Prey", which first appeared in the April 1969 issue of Playboy. "Julie" was based on "The Likeness of Julie", published in 1962 in the short story anthology Alone by Night.

"Prey" is a short horror story written by Richard Matheson. Amelia is a shy, sweet woman dominated by her overbearing and verbally abusive mother. After buying a Zuni fetish doll for her boyfriend, Amelia finds herself under attack when the doll - named He Who Kills - turns out to be alive and very much intent on living up to his name.
