Pola Negri en 1921. Aun en Polonia, Negri (rebautizada así por la poetisa italiana Ada Negri) llegaría a actuar en películas como Zona (La esposa), Bestia (La bestia) o Studenci (Estudiantes). Poco después viajaría a Berlín, Alemania, donde trabajaría en la compañía de teatro de Max Reinhardt y más tarde con Ernst Lubitsch.
Pola Negri ( / ˈpoʊlə ˈnɛɡri /; born Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec [a] [apɔˈlɔɲa xaˈwupʲɛt͡s]; [b] 3 January 1897 [c] – 1 August 1987) was a Polish stage and film actress and singer. She achieved worldwide fame during the silent and golden eras of Hollywood and European film for her tragedienne and femme fatale roles.
The Lubitsch-Negri combination was very successful and the roles that Pola played were earthy, exotic, strong women. One of her films, Passion (1919), was optioned and retitled "Passion" for exhibition in America. The film was such a success that by 1922 she and Lubitsch were both given contracts to work in Hollywood.

Gloria Swanson and Pola Negri played true exotics at a time when most women in film were shown standing around in feathers and furs. They portrayed women who were daring—active women who made their own decisions—and exhibited those traits in their offscreen lives as they managed their own careers.
