30 de oct. de 2021 · The Costa Rican Masquerade Day, known in the native Costa Rican, La Mascarada, is an adaption of Halloween Day in the U.S, usually celebrated on the 31st of October. It is a recent tradition in Costa Rica which has gained popularity in the country in the last few years.
29 de oct. de 2022 · On October 31, Costa Rica celebrates the National Day of the Traditional Costa Rican Masquerade. The celebration is even more special this year, as it also marks the recent declaration of the Traditional Masquerades as a National Symbol of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica inaugurated October 31 as the National Day of the Costa Rican Masquerade (el Dia de la Mascarada Tradicional Costarricense). The country's traditional parades, which feature larger-than-life masked figures, usually on stilts, are a long-held Costa Rican custom – and one that was in danger of dying out.
The first National Day of the Masquerade held on October 31, was in 1996. Interestingly enough, pre-Columbian tribes had their own masked and costumed rituals, and in Costa Rica nowadays the parades are a gorgeous mix of both ancient and contemporary traditions.
