During Joseph Smith’s prophetic ministry, he received over 100 revelations that were recorded and later canonized. 1 The majority were given in the first-person voice of Jesus Christ, and most of these now appear as sections of the Doctrine and Covenants.

A revelation to Joseph Smith dated 6 April 1830, the day he organized the Church of Christ, describes him as “a seer & Translater & Prop [h]et.” What did these titles mean to him and his followers? His work in translating the Book of Mormon helped shape their understanding.
Joseph Smith’s revelations restored, organized, and built The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and oriented thousands who converted to it in his lifetime and millions since. The earliest years of Mormon record keeping (1828–1831) consisted almost exclusively of recording revelatory texts.
