A number of specific questions are examined: Are there universally understood hand gestures?; Are there universal categories of gesturesi.e., universal messages with unique instances in each society?; Can the exact same gesture have opposite meanings in two cultures?; Can individuals articulate and explain the gestures common in their culture?;

  4. First and foremost, body language encompasses a wide range of gestures, facial expressions, postures, and even eye contact. These non-verbal cues can convey emotions, intentions, and attitudes. However, the interpretation of these cues can vary significantly across different cultures.

  5. Non-verbal gestures and greetings vary across countries, cultures, and religions. Bowing, kissing, saluting, touching fingers, tapping shoulders, clasping hands together, shaking fists, and pounding the chest are all gestures used to greet people, both formally and informally, in various countries around the world.

  6. Aside from specific cultural conventions governing how and when symbolic gestures like emblems are to be performed, it is also frequently the case that a given society has explicit conventions governing the appropriateness of gesture at allŠconsider, for example, the prohibition in some cultures on pointing as "impolite."

  7. We present the conceptual design and an early prototype of a real-time gesture translator using body tracking and gesture recognition in avatar-mediated intercultural interactions. It contributes to the ambitious goal of bridging between cultures by translating culture-specific gestures to enhance mutual understanding.
