Prior to 1986, Navistar International, then known as International Harvester Company, used the DT engine in farm and construction equipment. From 1997 to 2004, the DT was also rebadged and sold by Detroit Diesel as the Series 40.

Detroit Diesel and International have a MARKETING agreement whereby Detroit purchases these mid-range engines from International, adds their electronic package and sells them under the Detroit Diesel brand (mostly outside the USA).
