Xanthate salts of alkali metals are produced by the treatment of an alcohol, alkali, and carbon disulfide. The process is called xanthation. In chemical terminology, the alkali reacts with the alcohol to produce an alkoxide, which is the nucleophile that adds to the electrophilic carbon atom in CS 2.
The xanthate method for the preparation of alkanethiols involves two stages: (i) synthesis of the alkyl xanthate and (ii) subsequent cleavage by base hydrolysis or reduction (Scheme 14). Alkyl xanthates are usually prepared by treatment of alkyl halide with potassium ethyl xanthate or similar alkali metal xanthate reagents.
