Personal life Scholz married his first wife, Cynthia Hartford, in October 1971, shortly after they both graduated from college. They have a son who followed in his father's footsteps by graduating from MIT and becoming a successful entrepreneur (although he is not also a professional musician).

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Tom Scholz spent a good portion of his childhood playing sports and tinkering on just about anything motorized. He had a penchant for mini-bikes, go-carts and model airplanes, and always had a “work in progress.”
