There are several national symbols of Romania, representing Romania or its people in either official or unofficial capacities.
The idea behind the design of the coat of arms of Romania dates from 1859, when the two Romanian countries, Wallachia and Moldavia, united under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Then the two heraldic symbols, the golden aquila and the aurochs, were officially juxtaposed.
The national flag of Romania ( Romanian: drapelul României) is a tricolour. The Constitution of Romania states that "The flag of Romania is tricolour; the colours are arranged vertically in the following order from the flagpole: blue, yellow, red". [1] .

Although still subject to the Ottoman Empire, on April 23, 1867, Romania reestablished its vertical tricolour. Various changes were made in the coat of arms on the state flag in 1877 (at the time independence was declared), 1897, 1922, and—under the communist regime—in 1948, 1952, and 1965.
