Roger Sessions was an American composer of symphonic and instrumental music who played a leading part in educating his contemporaries to an appreciation of modern music. He studied at Harvard University and at the Yale School of Music and later took composition lessons from Ernest Bloch.
Roger Huntington Sessions (December 28, 1896 – March 16, 1985) was an American composer, teacher, and writer on music. He had initially started his career writing in a neoclassical style, but gradually moved further towards more complex harmonies and postromanticism, and finally the twelve-tone serialism of the Second Viennese School.
Sessions joined the Princeton faculty in 1935, accepted the offer of a full professorship at the University of California at Berkeley in 1945, and returned to Princeton as William Shubael Professor of Music in 1953.

Roger Sessions is the composer of a recently recorded cantata on Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" as well as numerous other works. He is the author of The Musical Experience of Composer, Performer, and Listener (Princeton).
