Psychologist Raymond Cattell analyzed Allport's list and whittled it down to 171 characteristics, mostly by eliminating terms that were redundant or uncommon. He then used a statistical technique known as factor analysis to identify traits that are related to one another.
Personality and Learning Theory, 2 vol. (1979–80), is considered Cattell’s most important work. In it he proposed a theory of human development that integrates the intellectual , temperamental, and dynamic aspects of personality in the context of environmental and cultural influences.

Raymond Cattell was an influential psychologist who developed new analytic techniques that allowed for more nuanced empirical measurements of the components of personality and intelligence.
Cattell's research was mainly in personality, abilities, motivations, and innovative multivariate research methods and statistical analysis (especially his many refinements to exploratory factor analytic methodology).
