Occupation (s) Actor, singer. Years active. 1972–1989. Ian Charleson (11 August 1949 – 6 January 1990) was a Scottish stage and film actor. He is best known internationally for his starring role as Olympic athlete and missionary Eric Liddell in the Oscar -winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire.
He was the son of a printer and sang soprano as a boy. Raised in Edinburgh, he attended the Royal High School and Edinburgh University, both on scholarship. He was a member of the Edinburgh University Drama Society as an actor, singer, and director, and even worked with costumes.

Ian Charleson. Actor: Chariots of Fire. Being born and raised in Edinburgh, Charleson attended the Royal High School and then went on to attend Edinburgh University. He initially studied architecture but switched to an MA degree after cultivating an interest in acting. He won a place at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after graduating from Edinburgh.
