- About Girton
Girton College is one of the 31 constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The college was established in 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon as the first women's college in Cambridge. In 1948, it was granted full college status by the university, marking the official admittance of women to the university.
Girton is a home from home… a link to the world of work, and a potentially life-changing experience. Today, there are almost 800 matriculated students, over one third of whom are graduates, together with a community of around 120 academic Fellows and around 135 operational staff.
As one of the larger Cambridge colleges with around 500 undergraduates and 280 graduates in a wide range of subjects we provide an exciting interdisciplinary academic environment.

By Cambridge standards, Girton has a large English community, with around 30 undergraduates reading the subject at any one time. In Cambridge, the Colleges have a high degree of autonomy in how English is taught.
Girton is a 10-minute bus/15-minute cycle from Cambridge’s centre. The relaxed atmosphere, tight-knit community, and distance gives students the unique feeling of ‘coming home’ after busy days of work and play.
