He died on Christmas night 1997; his ashes rest in the cemetery of Sant’Anna in Trieste, in the very simple family tomb. Strehler’s directorial contributions in the field of opera were remarkable, favoured by his musical knowledge and his “ability to rejuvenate the inseparable and traditional gestures of the singers”.
