The eye's internal anatomy is similar to that of other vertebrates, but has a structure, the pecten oculi, unique to birds. Some bird groups have specific modifications to their visual system linked to their way of life.
The position of a bird’s eyes varies depending on its foraging behaviors and place in the food chain. Birds of prey have eyes on the front of their head, just like we do, but most other birds have eyes on the sides of their head. The difference in eye position affects the size of the area that birds can see and how they perceive depth.

However, the distributions of photoreceptors across the retina, and of the ganglion cells to which they connect, exhibit marked interspecific, and even interindividual, variation.
Prey birds have eyes positioned on the sides of their head, which allows little visual overlap and, therefore, limited binocular vision. However, lateral placement allows each eye to monitor a large area, and some birds can even see a full 360 degrees around themselves!
