The dog meat trade is most widespread in China, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Nagaland in northern India. This trade is well-organized, with high numbers of dogs being stolen or taken from the streets, transported over long distances and brutally slaughtered.
Gaegogi (개고기) literally means "dog meat" in Korean. The term itself is often mistaken as the term for Korean soup made from dog meat, which is actually called bosintang (보신탕; 補身湯, Body nourishing soup) (sometimes spelled "bo-shintang"). Estimates of the number of animals consumed vary widely.
Across Asia, millions of dogs and cats are brutally killed for meat. HSI campaigns all year round in China, South Korea, Indonesia and Viet Nam to end the cruelty. In most countries, dogs are stolen pets or grabbed from the streets. In South Korea, dogs are farmed in appalling conditions.
