On 15th January 1969, drummer Andy Ward joined The Brew, embryonic origin of Camel, at the tender age of 14. Ward replaced previous sticksman Alan Butcher and so the heart of Camel had begun to take shape. Andy Ward stayed until January 1983.
Born in Epsom, England, Ward attended the City of London Freemen's School. He began drumming at the age of 13 in a local rock band with Jim Butt (guitar), Doug Houston (vocals), Colin Burgess (bass) and Jan (Murray) Obodynski (keyboards).
The band was formed in Guildford, Surrey, in 1971 by guitarist Andrew Latimer, drummer Andy Ward, bassist Doug Ferguson and keyboardist Peter Bardens. Latimer, Ward, and Ferguson had performed in the Guildford area as a trio named Brew, and in 1971 they auditioned to be the backing band for singer-songwriter Phillip Goodhand-Tait .
He was now 16 years old. The band - called Shades - was legendary blues singer Champion Jack Dupree’s backing band and Andy’s first taste of stadium rock was in Germany when Champion Jack Dupree played a three-day rock and blues festival at the Gruggehalle in Essen.
