Styx is a small natural satellite of Pluto whose discovery was announced on 11 July 2012. It was discovered by use of the Hubble Space Telescope, and is the smallest of the five known moons of Pluto.
Pluto's four small circumbinary moons orbit Pluto at two to four times the distance of Charon, ranging from Styx at 42,700 kilometres to Hydra at 64,800 kilometres from the barycenter of the system. They have nearly circular prograde orbits in the same orbital plane as Charon.
Pluto’s tiny moon Styx was uncovered in a Hubble survey searching for potential hazards in advance of the July 2015 New Horizons spacecraft Pluto flyby. Styx band members are intrigued by the latest images of the Pluto system from New Horizons.
28 de jun. de 2011 · Pluto's moon system – Charon, Nix, Hydra, Styx, and Kerberos – is believed to have formed after a collision between Pluto, and another Kuiper Belt Object early in the history of the solar system. The smashup flung material that coalesced into the family of satellites observed around Pluto.
Pluto has five moons. Its largest moon, Charon, is about half the size of Pluto, making it the largest known moon relative to its parent planet in our solar system. Pluto's other moons are: Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx.
Pluto’s other four moons—Hydra, Nix, Kerberos, and Styx—are much smaller than Charon. For every orbit completed by Charon, Hydra completes about one-sixth of an orbit, Kerberos about one-fifth, Nix about one-fourth, and Styx one-third.
12 de may. de 2015 · For the first time, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has photographed Kerberos and Styx – the smallest and faintest of Pluto’s five known moons. It’s a complete Pluto family photo – or at least a photo of the family members we’ve already met.
