Es hijo del español Francisco Estévez Martínez, gallego que emigró a los Estados Unidos desde la parroquia de Parderrubias (Pontevedra) tras pasar por Cuba, en donde trabajó recolectando caña de azúcar, y de Mary Ann Phalen, mujer de origen irlandés.
