Gedun Drupa, 1st Dalai Lama. Gedun Drupa was born in a cow-shed in Gyurmey Rupa near Sakya in the Tsang region of central Tibet, the son of Gonpo Dorjee and Jomo Namkha Kyi, nomadic tribespeople. [3] . He was raised as a shepherd until the age of seven.
Gendun Drub was instrumental in spreading the new Geluk tradition in Tsang; he founded the great monastery Tashilhunpo in 1447 and was its first abbot, until 1484. He was posthumously identified as the First Dalai Lama, a previous incarnation of the third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, who first held the title.

El primer dalái lama fue Gendun Drup pero no fue reconocido por las tribus mongolas. El segundo fue Gendun Gyatso, descubierto por los monjes tibetanos en el año 1476. En ese momento, eran solo líderes espirituales y no jefes de estado porque el Tíbet estaba bajo del dominio de una monarquía.
