Harry Love was the head of California’s first law enforcement agency, the California Rangers, and became famous for allegedly killing the notorious bandit Joaquin Murrieta. Love was born in Vermont in about 1809 and left home at an early age to become a sailor.
On May 11, 1853, Governor John Bigler ordered the creation of the California Rangers with the sold purpose of capturing or killing the “Five Joaquins Gang” and appointed Harry Love as Captain.
