Sverre Helge Hassel (30 July 1876 – 6 June 1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer and one of the first five people to reach the South Pole. [1] [2] Biography. Sverre Hassel was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. As soon as he was old enough, he went to sea, earning his mate's certificate.
Hassel was a customs officer and polar explorer who participated on the second and third Fram expeditions. Sverre Helge Hassel was born on 30 July 1876 and grew up in the working class district of Grønland in Kristiania (Oslo).

Born: 1876, Kristiania (Oslo), Norway. Died : 1928, outside Amundsens home, Norway. Sverre Hassel went to sea aged around 15, serving first on the training ship Christiania before earning a mate’s and then a master’s certificate. In 1895, he entered the Sjømilitære korps (Navy Corps).

The Fram left Kristiansand on her third and last voyage of exploration on 10 August 1910. On the way south Amundsen told the experienced dog-driver, Sverre Hassel, of the new destination as Hassel’s skills were crucial to the expedition to the South Pole.
