Spencer Compton Cavendish, 8th duke of Devonshire was a British statesman whose opposition to the Irish Home Rule policy of his own Liberal Party caused him to assume (1886) the leadership of the Liberal Unionist Party and to become increasingly identified with the Conservatives.
Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire (1833-1908) The 8th Duke of Devonshire was a statesmen who served an active role in Parliament for more than 50 years. Queen Victoria asked him to be Prime Minister three times, but each time he refused.
He became 8th duke of Devonshire (1891) and in 1893 moved the rejection of the second home rule bill in the lords. In 1895 he became lord lieutenant of Co. Waterford, and was lord president of the council (1895–1903) in the conservative-led government.
