As a Representative during the presidencies of George Washington and John Adams, Giles was a leading Republican opponent of the Federalist administrations’ policies, criticizing Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton’s financial program as well as the Jay Treaty and the Alien and Sedition Acts.
