Hiram Winard Harper (born June 4, 1962) is an American jazz drummer. Career. Harper played in the 1980s with Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and with Betty Carter for four years. While working with Carter he met Wycliffe Gordon, with whom Harper would collaborate repeatedly. [1]

BIOGRAPHY. Winard Harper was born in Baltimore in 1962, a child prodigy. Although his parents were not musicians they were full of encouragment as they noticed him beating on cans when he was three or four years old.
Winard Harper is a celebrated jazz drummer and leader of his own groups, who has worked with many great jazz artists and recorded several albums for Savant Records. He is also a frequent residency leader for the Kennedy Center's Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead program and a frequent guest performer at the KC Jazz Club.
