Franz Nicolay (born 1977) is an American musician and writer. He is best known for playing the accordion and piano in The World/Inferno Friendship Society and keyboards in The Hold Steady from 2005 to 2010 and again from 2016 onwards.

From roughly 2000–07, I was a member of the legendary anarchist punk orchestra World/Inferno Friendship Society (including the Vox Inferne acapella project!). From 2005–09 and again from 2016–present I’ve been a member of “world’s best bar band” The Hold Steady. THE PRESENT: Franz Nicolay (solo)
