  6. Ira Allen, (1751-1814) one of the major founders of Vermont, was an intelligent and complex character who led a vigorous and purposeful life, though it did not end well. He is also remembered as a founder of the University of Vermont, where a life-sized statue of him graces its green.

  7. Ira was born at Cornwall; he had a good education and became a skilled surveyor. In 1771 he went to Vermont as surveyor for the Onion River Land Company, which he and his brothers had established for buying lands in what was then known as the New Hampshire Grants.
