David Peter Hemery, CBE DL (born 18 July 1944) is a British former track and field athlete, best known as the winner of the 400 metres hurdles at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

David Hemery (born July 18, 1944, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England) is an English hurdler who held the 400-metre-hurdles world record of 48.1 sec (1968–72). His father’s work took the family to the United States, where Hemery attended school, graduating from Boston University in 1969.

David Hemery wasn't sure where he'd finished in the final of the 400m hurdles. He saw a BBC commentator running towards him, holding a microphone, so he asked him what had happened. “Did I win?” said Hemery.
