Gustaf John Ramstedt (October 22, 1873 – November 25, 1950) was a Finnish diplomat, orientalist and linguist. He was also an early Finnish Esperantist, and chairman of the Esperanto-Association of Finland.
7 de feb. de 2015 · The Swedish-speaking Finn, Gustaf John Ramstedt, was an internationally renowned Finnish man of science and diplomat. Ramstedt went on numerous expeditions to central Asia, Mongolia and Siberia between 1898 and 1912.
Upon Finnish independence, and on the strength of his language abilities, Gustaf John Ramstedt was chosen in 1919 to be Finland’s envoy in Japan, China and Siam (Thailand). He was based in Tokyo. In the course of a career lasting a decade, he was to cement relations between Finland and Japan.
Ramstedt had originally studied Theology and Oriental Languages but early enough changed to Sanskrit, Swedish (his mother tongue), and other philological subjects.
It has been said that Ramstedt began a new era in the history of Mongol studies: he became the founder of Mongol linguistics. He spread light not only on Mongol, but also on Altaic lin-guistics as a whole, including all related dialects. 21 de dic. de 2022 · Alongside his career as a scholar, G. J. Ramstedt is a distinguished diplomat who served as Chargé d’Affaires to Bangkok and Tokyo and represented Finland in Asia in its early days of independence.
Of particular note is Gustaf John Ramstedt (1873-1950), who is generally regarded as the father of comparative Altaic linguistics (Ruhlen 130) and who has been referred to as "the most outstanding Altaist in the history of Altaic comparative studies and the real founder of the Altaic theory" (Yi 44).
