Life and work. References. Note. Further reading. External links. Philip Wilson Steer OM (28 December 1860 – 18 March 1942) was a British painter of landscapes, seascapes plus portraits and figure studies. He was also an influential art teacher.
Philip Wilson Steer (1860–1942) The Fitzwilliam Museum. (b Birkenhead, 28 Dec. 1860; d London, 21 Mar. 1942). English painter, son of a portrait painter Philip Steer (1810–71). With Sickert (his friend and exact contemporary), Steer was the leader among the progressive British artists of his generation who looked to France for inspiration.
Such works catch an impression of place with barely tinted washes of color, so evanescent they appear more like a veil than a fluid stream of coloured water. He became leader of the so-called ‘English Impressionist' school, and taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, London for thirty years.
