Leisz grew up in the garage band culture of mid-1960s Southern California. He spent time at the Ashgrove, the Troubador, and clubs on the Sunset Strip . He began playing guitar and soon added dobro and lap steel, inspired to pick up the pedal steel after hearing Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Buddy Emmons.
Ashgrove is an album by American artist Dave Alvin, released in 2004. It reached number 38 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Aiding Alvin in crafting the album was co-Ashgrove alum Greg Leisz. A prominent sideman who has played with Bill Frisell, k.d. lang, Joni Mitchell, Wilco, and others, Leisz worked with Alvin on in the Allnighters in 1986 and produced two Alvin solo albums.

Alvin is supported by Greg Leisz, who produced the disc, on various guitars and by Don Heffington on drums and Bob Glaub and David Piltch on bass. All are first-rate players and Leisz makes some especially fine contributions on slide and steel guitar.
