Richard Pankhurst (1927-2017) was a British scholar and Ethiopianist, son of Sylvia Pankhurst and Silvio Corio. He was a founding member of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies and a prolific author on Ethiopian history and culture.
Richard Keir Pethick Pankhurst OBE, historian and scholar of Ethiopia, passed away on February 16, 2017 at the age of 89 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he made his home with his wife of sixty years, Rita Pankhurst (born Eldon).
Richard Pankhurst was a prominent and influential historian of Ethiopia and Northeast Africa, who worked for decades in Addis Ababa. He published extensively on various aspects of Ethiopian culture, history, society and peoples, and was also involved in the return of Ethiopian treasures from abroad.

In 1879, at the age of 21, Emmeline married the older Dr Richard Pankhurst, a barrister who advocated women’s suffrage, educational reform and freedom of speech. She served with her husband on the committee which promoted the Married Women’s Property Act and at the same time was a member of the Manchester Suffrage Committee.
