The singer first received radio airplay in 2001 with his self-released first single, "Do Ya Thang". His second self-released album, 2005's The King of Down South R&B, gained airplay throughout the region, from Florida to Texas.

The CD The King Of Down South R&B was self-published in 2005. In 2007, the CD Time For A Change, with the nationally-acclaimed single "Cupid Shuffle," appeared. Shortly before releasing the CD, Cupid got a call inviting him to sign with national label Atlantic Records.
Both experiences informed his second independently released album, 2005's The King of Down South R&B, which contained elements of country, blues, and New Orleans bounce music. In late 2006, Cupid was finally discovered by major-label Atlantic due to the buzz surrounding his local single at the time, "Cupid Shuffle."
