Family. Fier, known as Tony, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ruthe Marie Fier and Anton J. Fier Jr., a former Marine and electrician. His parents separated when he was young and he lived with his stepfather, a polka musician. Early career. In the mid-late-1970s Fier worked in a record store, began drumming, and contributed to recordings by The Styrenes and Pere Ubu.

The drummer Anton Fier performs with the Golden Palominos, the band he formed in the 1980s, at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan on Dec. 29, 2012. His death on Sept. 14, 2022 at 66 — confirmed by a cremation notice from a service in Basel, Switzerland — leaves as many questions as answers.
