Mason Science College was a university college in Birmingham, England, and a predecessor college of the University of Birmingham. Founded in 1875 by industrialist and philanthropist Sir Josiah Mason , the college was incorporated into the University of Birmingham in 1900.

George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university in Fairfax County, Virginia, in Northern Virginia, near Washington, D.C. The university is named in honor of George Mason, a Founding Father of the United States. The university was founded in 1949, and it became an independent university in 1972.

Mason Science College was the first institution in Birmingham to provide degree-level teaching. It opened to students in October 1880 but it had been founded in 1870 by the industrialist Sir Josiah Mason. The foundation stone for the college building was laid on 23 February 1875, Mason's birthday.
