Its founder members were Paul Young (vocals), Ian Wilson (guitar), Vic Emerson (keyboards), Ashley Mulford (lead guitar), John Stimpson (bass) and Tony Cresswell (drums). The band took their name from the Carson McCullers novella Ballad of the Sad Café .
Tony Cresswell. Drums. Tony was the drummer on the band’s first two albums “Fanx Ta-Ra” and Misplaced Ideals” as well as on the band’s video release “An Evening With Sad Café”. He quit in 1978 to be replaced by Dave Irving.

Dave Irving joined Sad Café in time for their third and most successful album, Facades. He made his name working with bands like Albie Donnelly’s Supercharge and he is a drummer of the first order. When Tony Cresswell left the band after Misplaced Ideals, he was the obvious choice.
