Hackney Downs was founded as the Grocers Company School in 1876. It transferred to the LCC in 1906 and became Hackney Downs School in 1944. It was initially a boys grammar school but became a comprehensive school in September 1974.

By 1952, Hackney Downs was a three-form-entry school with 539 pupils on roll. After a devastating fire in 1963, following much negotiation and extensive rebuilding, the school reopened in 1969 as a six-form-entry comprehensive for 900 boys.
