Scott Johnson was chosen by the band in December 1992 as Hopkins' stand-in on tour, and became a permanent member in 1994. New Miserable Experience became the band's breakthrough album. The first single released from the album was "Hey Jealousy", which had been written by Hopkins.
For this episode I spoke with Scotty Johnson (far left), guitarist for the band Gin Blossoms. We discussed their new album, “Mixed Reality”, how his extensive training in jazz influenced his guitar solos, and the night years ago that changed his musical direction.
Hopkins was replaced by Scott Johnson. The record label then withheld $15,000 (equivalent to $32,568 in 2023) owed to Hopkins until he agreed to sign over half of his publishing royalties. Hopkins was also required to relinquish his mechanical royalties to Johnson, his replacement.
