He is best known as a guitarist and co-founder of the alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. He was a member until the band's initial breakup in 2000 and rejoined in 2018.

James began his career in Chicago as a co-founder and contributing songwriter of The Smashing Pumpkins.He recorded and toured with the group from 1988 - 2000, during which time they released ten albums and became one of the biggest bands of the era, selling millions of albums and filling arenas worldwide.
