Later that day, the neck block was glued and clamped to a pair of bent rosewood sides, which had been selected from the many such pieces drying in the attic of Martin’s North Street factory. The rosewood sides had been shaped on a hot bending iron, using one of the cleanest templates in the shop as a reference.
The MTR13 Retro acoustic guitar strings represent yet another quality, vintage-inspired set of strings in Martin’s Retro line. Encouraged by legendary bluegrass player Tony Rice, Martin was inspired to bring back the tone of 1930s strings, when nickel ruled the acoustic world.
Rice covered “Home from the Forest” on Manzanita in 1979, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on his 1983 album Church Street Blues, and eventually recorded enough Lightfoot songs to fill an entire compilation, 1996’s Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot (Rounder).
