The band formed as a four-piece in the summer of 1981 and featured Alec MacKaye, former vocalist for the Untouchables, on vocals, Michael Hampton and Ivor Hanson of Henry Rollins' first band, State of Alert on guitar and drums respectively, as well as Chris Bald on bass.
Alec MacKaye and Chris Bald (both ex- Faith) formed Ignition with Dante Ferrando ( Gray Matter) and Chris Thomson (ex- Soulside) in 1986. The band played its first show in the spring of 1987 at D.C. space.

Mike and Ivor from SOA (Ivor had taken over the drums for Simon towards the end of the band) formed a new band with Alec of The Untouchables singing and another Wilson High School kid, Chris Bald, on bass. They called themselves 'The Faith' and played their first show at H.B. Woodlawn High School in November '81.

Ignition was a hardcore band formed in 1987 by Alec MacKaye, Chris Bald, Dante Ferrando, and Chris Thomson. They released several records on Dischord and toured extensively until 1989.
