The story concerns the plight of plucky young Willard, whose father was cheated out of the family business by the evil Mr. Martin. Willard had counted on inheriting the family concern, but now finds himself a lowly stockboy, the butt of Mr. Martin's cruel jests.
Nagged by his mother (Elsa Lanchester), bullied by his boss (Ernest Borgnine), a young man (Bruce Davison) trains mansion rats to kill for him.
