After the breakup of the Pixies, Santiago went into a depression for the first couple of years but remained on good terms with bandmate Black Francis (who soon adopted the name Frank Black). Black, who was recording his 1993 debut album, Frank Black , contacted Santiago to ask whether he would contribute lead guitar.

After they both dropped out of school, they formed Pixies in January 1986 with Thompson on rhythm guitar/lead vocals and Santiago on lead guitar.
