Early life. Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960, was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits.

Simply Red are an English soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. [4] Band leader, singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, was the only original member left by the time Simply Red initially disbanded in 2010. [5]

After his mother walked out and abandoned the family when he was just a toddler, the young Hucknall was left in his father’s care.
